The company Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH from Nettetal, Germany, is among the finalists competing for the German Economy Prize for Innovation 2012/2013 in the category “Midsize Companies”. The platform technology “phytodiversity” enables the fusion of plant cells for the purpose of accelerating the breeding process so that selected traits which would be difficult to obtain by other breeding methods may be transferred into plants – without the need for gene technology.
This technology is implemented using the Eppendorf Multiporator® system. The fusion module of the Multiporator, in combination with a special fusion buffer, allows simple and perfect electrofusion of two plant cells of different origin for the development of novel plant cultivars. One mandatory condition for successful fusion is direct contact between the cells. The intelligent Multiporator system by Eppendorf simplifies this process, while at the same time proving flexible and useful for other applications such as transfection of cells via electroporation. Besides poplars, potatoes and mint, Phytowelt has fused and regenerated grasses, grains and legumes by client commission using its Multiporator based platform technology. Among the goals were increased yield of essential oils, resistance to disease or increased production of biomass. The “German Economy Prize for Innovation” will be awarded for the 32nd time, and it honors the most influential scientific, technological, commercial and intellectual innovations. The prize is under the patronage of the minister for economy; it will be awarded in the society house Palmengarten in Frankfurt/Main on March 9, 2013.
